Activities of National Service Scheme

NSS PROGRAMME OFFICER
National Service Scheme is a Nobel experiment in academic expansion. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among the students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings academic institutions closer to society. NSS Unit of PSG College of Nursing has been started in the year 2000, volunteers involve actively in both special camp and regular camp activities.

WORLD HEALTH DAY CELEBRATION
SNA & NSS of PSG College of Nursing celebrated World Health Day by conducting Poster and Essay (Tamil & English) competitions on the Theme “Save Lives, Make Hospitals safe in Emergencies” on 7.4.2009. students from all four batches participated in the competitions. Prizes and Certificates were given to the students
MEDICAL CAMP AT KOVAI CLASS
NSS Unit of PSG College of Nursing along with PSG Hospitals organized medical camp for the Kovai CLASS ( Child Labour Abolition Support Society ) children on 19th April 2009 at Perur with the great support by Mr Vijayakumar, Child Labour Project Officer, Collectorate, Coimbatore. A team of 7 doctors, 5 Attenders, 2 Lab Technicians from Hospital and 15 volunteers from PSG College of Nursing attended the camp. Nearly 120 children were examined under the camp. Blood Grouping is done for 66 Students. Among 120 Children only 41 were healthy, 71 had General Complaints, 7 students had ophthalmic problem, 13 had Dental Problem and one child had the problem of TOF. TOF child is been asked to come under “Ilam sirar iruthaya aruvai chikichai thittam”. It is Informed to Mr Vijayakumar Project Officer. In Blood grouping among 66 students 25 of them ‘B’ Positive, 23 of them ‘O’ Positive, 14 of them ‘A’ Positive, 3 had ‘AB’ Positive and 1 child had ‘A’ Negative Group.
The Volunteers gave health education on various topics like Personal Hygiene, Balanced Diet, Worm Infestation, Diarrheal Management and Anemia. It was a great opportunity for the volunteers to get to interact with the children with poverty, health problems of them and the measures of the child labor abolition support society.
RESIDENTIAL CAMP AT RAMAKRISHNA MISSION VIDHYALAYA
Seven NSS volunteers attended the 3 days Residential camp from 22.05.09 to 24.05.09 which was conducted at Ramakrishna Mission Vidhyalaya on Achieving Human Excellence. Around 300 students from seven districts participated in the Programme. Students had a better opportunity to mingle with their peer group of Various Institutions, Participated in group discussions and role-plays and developed leadership qualities. Resource person from various field like Human Resource Department, Yoga Master, Physical Educators from Special Olympics team and other scholars, guided the students in achieving human excellence. All students were given certificates, collection of Swami Vivekananda books and his photos.
OBSERVATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING
NSS Unit & Mental Health Nursing Department of PSG college of Nursing jointly with Directorate of Field Publicity, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting observed the International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking on 30th June 09 at 11 am. Various Competitions like Tamil & English slogan writing & Tableau were conducted and prizes were distributed by Mr Parameshwaran, IIS, Additional Director, PIB ( Press Information Beauro) New Delhi.Prof Eliozabeth Jean Abraham, Principal, Prof T Nirmala, Vice Principal, PSG College of Nursing felicitated the Programme.
NSS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
The NSS Advisory Committee Meeting was conducted on 02.07.09 at 3-4 pm. In the Meeting We discussed about the Emergency Evacuation Plan & the forth coming activities. Chair person & Advisory committee members gave many valuable suggestions on preparing protocol in the Emergency Evacuation Plan. Then we discussed about the changing of adopted area. Four NSS volunteers’ names were nominated for State NSS award.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF PSG PARAMEDICAL SCIENCES BLOCK:
The NSS Unit & YRC Association jointly conducted emergency Evacuation Programme with Fire extinguisher Demonstration in PSG Paramedical Sciences Block. It took totally 4 Min to evacuate the building. It was great opportunity to the students to know about the need for emergency preparedness.
World Breast Feeding Week Celebration:
Along with Rural Health Centre Vedapatti NSS unit, Maternity & Paediatric nursing departments celebrated world Breast feeding week celebration on 6th july 2008at onapalayam. We conducted Exclusive breast fed baby & Healthy Baby & healthy mother Competitions. Prizes were sponsored by Rotary club of Texcity, Coijmbatore.
National Nutrition Week Celebration
Along with Field Publicity Office, Singanallur and Neelambur Rural Health Centre, National Nutrition Week was observed by having Quiz and Drawing Competition for the school students. Prizes were sponsored by Ministry of Press Information Bureau, New Delhi. Health education on various topics was given to the school students by NSS Volunteers.
World Alzheimer’s Disease Day Observation
Along with Medical Surgical Nursing Department, World Alzheimer’s Disease Day was observed by having essay competition (Tamil and English) and organizing film show on Alzheimer’s disease. As the elderly population are arising more, the volunteers made aware about the Alzheimer’s disease.
Ban the bulb drive campaign
Volunteers attended this programme which was conducted by RAAC Association, Coimbatore. awards were given ecofriendly home, ecofriendly community, ecofriendly hospitals. they gave informations on protecting the future generation and saving the national resources. it was useful for the volunteers to know about the environment protection.
World TB Day
CMC Hospital organized an awareness campaign. It was based on the epidemiology of tuberculosis, relation of HIV with tuberculosis, DOTS programme and NGO’s responsibility.
World Water Day
Poster competition was conducted by PSG College of Pharmacy on the theme ‘Shared water and shared opportunities’. four NSS volunteers were participated in the competition and won II prize.
NSS Advisory Committee Meeting
The NSS Advisory Committee Meeting was conducted on 12.03.2009 at 3 p.m. During the meeting, programme for the regular NSS activities were discussed and decided. The NSS special camp report was read out and suggestions from the volunteers were accepted.
Emergency Evacuation
The NSS Programme Officer from PSG Paramedical Institution (Nursing, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy) had a meeting together to conduct the mockdrill on emergency evacuation. In the meeting it was decided to conduct the drill by April month. The exit has to be cleared before the drill. The programme officers, Dr.Sundarakumar and members from NSS Advisory Committee had discussions on planning about this drill.
International Science Day celebration
As part of International Science Day celebration Volunteers attended the Quiz Competition conducted by PSG College of Pharmacy.
Nutrition Exhibition
NSS Unit along with Community Health Nursing Department organized & conducted Nutrition Exhibition Programme at Govt Higher Sec School Arasur on the theme “Importance of Nutrition in Health”. The Programme was inaugrated by Seva Rathna Mr A V Anbarasu, Panchayat President & The Head Master of the school. The students Emphasized regarding the importance of each nutrients & its function through various AV Aids like posters, charts & models. In total 600 students and the teachers from that school were benefited by this programme. On the same day evening, mass awareness programme was organized for the public. The students performed skit, villupattu, puppet show based upon the theme Nutrition & health. Ms.Deepa, Asst. Lecturer, Community Health Nursing Department accompanied the students.
National Youth Day Celebration
As part of Youth day celebration volunteers attended the essay competition on Youth Contribution towards India Development from Vivekananda Institute, Madurai. Seven members participated & 5 members were selected & all of them got the Vivekanandar Book as their prizes.
NSS PO Meeting
NSS PO Attended the NSS programme officers meeting at The Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai. Special Camp stay is reduced from 10 days to 7 days. State Liasion Officer explained that all the programmes should be focused on the five main issues like Education for All, Institutional Deliveries, Carrier Guidance, Environmental Sanitation and Sports & Culture. He also told that 60 % of the corpus fund can be utilized to get some equipment in NSS. Youth Officer stressed on the importance of PO training & it is compulsory that all PO’s should have attended the training & also told that 18 % reservation to SC / ST is important in NSS.The university coordinator told that NSS E mail ID at the university level is created and all PO’s have to give their email ID. Henceforth the communication to the PO’s may be through the Mail & the reports can be sent every month through mail. He also told that reports needed in the paper as earlier.
World AIDS Day
As Part of World AIDS Day, fund raising programme was conducted by arranging film show for the students & funds collected from the faculty. Nearly Rs.2,700/- was collected & DD was given to Ms Meenatchi, The president of CDHUNS (Coimbatore District HIV Ullore Nala Sangam). They were happy to receive the amount.
NSS Advisory Committee Meeting
It was conducted on 24.10.2008. Discussion was based on the special camp activities and stay of students. Suggestions were given from the Principal and the Advisors. It was accepted by Programme Officer
World Mental Health Day
NSS Unit and Mental Health Nursing department jointly observed the World Mental Health Day on 15 .10 2008.The programme was inaugurated by Prof T Nirmala, Vice Principal, PSG College of Nursing. According to the theme creating awareness among public, human chain was formed from Krishnammal College to PSG Tech entrance by our College of Nursing, Physiotherapy & Pharmacy Students. 5000 pamphlets which contain the information on importance of mental health were distributed to the public.
NSS Day Celebration
NSS day was celebrated by having an effective lecture on transforming your life through powerful positive thinking by Mrs Suzanne Thomas, Senior Consultant, American advantage Organization.
Child Labour Survey At Parsn Apartments
45 III year B Sc Nursing students conducted the child labor survey with a request from Mr Vijaya Kumar, Project Officer, Child labor Collectorate. Nearly 328 houses were surveyed & found 3 child labor & it was informed to the Director & the necessary actions were taken by the Government.
Advisory Committee Meeting
Advisory Committee Meeting is held once in three months to review the activities of unit at college level. Under the guidance of dynamic advisory committee members NSS Unit is undertaking activities for the betterment of students and society.

NSS Special Camp
NSS Special Camp is organized on the theme of “Healthy Youth for Healthy Nation” between 08.12.2006 to 17.12.2006 at Arasur.
Activities implemented are as follows.

Mrs.Sathya P, NSS Programme Officer attended Programme Officers meeting at the TamilNadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai on 26.04.2007 and presented the report on the activities of the unit.
SNA ACTIVITIES
The SNA shows the seeds of leadership qualities and professional development among the students that help them to reach miles in the field of nursing. The SNA unit strives hard for the up liftment of the students through professional, educational and extra curricular activities.
THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
The board members met together and planned the activities for the whole year under the guidance of SNA president Prof.Elizabeth Jean Abraham and SNA Advisor, Ms.Roselin Myvizhi J E. The executive committee met regularly to plan and discuss about various activities. The general body meeting was conducted once in 2 months where the students expressed their views and problems. The participants and winners of various competitions were congratulated.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
“The ultimate aim of education is build a confident individual contributing to the uplift society.”The SNA unit has organized the following educational activities. Students participated in national level essay competition regarding ‘National youth day’ conducted by Sri Ramakrishna Mission and won prizes. Students participated in quiz competition on “World Science Day” conducted by PSG College of pharmacy. Students won II prize in poster competition on the theme ‘Save water save life’ which was conducted by PSG College of pharmacy for World Water day.
Students organized and participated actively in the sports meet 2009 and the overall trophy was won by 2008 batch students in the month of March. Students participated and won prizes in essay and poster competitions conducted by PSG College of Nursing on ‘World health day’ based on the theme “SAVE LIVES. MAKE HOSPITALS SAFE IN EMERGENCIES”. Students observed International nurses day by conducting a debate on the theme “PEOPLE CHOOSE NURSING- SALARY ORIENTED OR SRVICE ORIENTED.” In the month of June students participated in slogan and tableau competition for International Day against Drug Abuse along with NSS. Students actively organized World population day with the theme of ‘Fight against poverty: Educate by statistical and articles display related on world and Indian population and mind glowing slogans based on population explosion in the month of July.

The Student Nurses’ Association is a nation wide organization, that aims for reaping the Best Nurses by sowing the seeds right from the student period. It was established at the PSG College of Nursing in 1995.
